Title: Camp Mustache Toronto: "CMTO 2022: FIREscape"
Post by: Le Poisson on April 25, 2022, 02:56:53 PM
Hello everyone and welcome to the new and improved CMTO 2022 - FIRE-scape thread with all the news that's new and improved on our camp just a couple hours from Toronto. Here you will find all the important details, meet your camp friends, and find out the things you never learned in school about how we roll at CMTO - FIRE-scape.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

1. What is CMTO - FIRE-scape - these events are a chance for like-minded folks to get together and talk through paths to success, future planning, fun and games, and all the pieces that fit together to build the puzzle that is a Mustachian life. We are calling this event a FIRE-scape because it strays from our usual bunk-bed camp and has gone "Deluxe" with hotel rooms, pools, and all the fancy stuff.

2. Where is CMTO 2022 - FIRE-scape - this year's event is taking place at a venue midway between Toronto and Ottawa/Montreal. Travel is best arranged to one of the following airports: Ottawa, Toronto, or Syracuse. There is also regular train service to Belleville Ontario, and you could get a cab from there into camp. I do not know what cab fare would be. Highway coaches (buses) also serve Belleville - try Megabus. UBER is not dependable in Belleville.

The venue is hotel-style and includes an indoor pool, an indoor/outdoor pool, weight room, grounds, etc. On the Lake Ontario shore. There are wineries, bike tours, fishing, and beaches nearby for day outings.

3. When is CMTO 2022 - FIRE-scape - Plot Twist!!! OUR DATES HAVE BEEN CHANGED - camp will be on September 30th to October 2nd. A conflict with the venue booking has bumped our dates to the last weekend in September.

4. How much is a ticket to CMTO 2022 - FIRE-scape: Prices are to follow, we will keep them as affordable as possible.

5. Who should come to CMTO 2022 - FIRE-scape? You, obviously, but also all your friends from here and the FIRE community, in fact lets start the discussion there and we can all talk about that...

May 10, 2022:

FIREscape UPDATE

Last night there was a meeting. It was intense. Words like "collaboration" and "cross-functional" and "Ameliorate" were tossed around. Someone even wore a tie. We thought outside the box and flew ideas up the flag pole to see who saluted. Things are taking shape.

So here's all the stuff you've been waiting to find out.

1. Dates remain unchanged: September 30, Oct 1, 2.
2. Cost: We anticipate a per person cost of $175 plus your room and some meals.
3. Inclusions: Your ticket includes all the wonderfulness of CMTO-FIREscape plus meals on Friday. Your hotel room will have to be booked with the hotel itself at a cost of $95 per night. You can get a double bed (sleeps 2) or two double beds (sleeps 4). Some will opt for a room to themself.
4. Meals: we include lunch and a group dinner on Friday, and the hotel includes breakfast with your room however Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday lunch will be "Fend for yourself." We chose this arrangement because there is a large catering fee to eat at the site, and arranging catering for all meals with different vendors was going to be a logistical nightmare. Note: by not including all meals we cut the ticket price by about $100 per person. Catering is expensive, and you can do better than we could.
5. Speakers: we still need a few more presenters. Currently we are heavy on lifestyle stuff and need a few more technical presentations. If you want to share strategies or do a case study, let me know.
6. Post-FIRE panel: We would like as much diversity as possible on the panel this time. In the past we've done targeted panels, this go round we'd like to hear from more folks with more ideas. Please raise your hand.
7. Kids and pets: this will be the most kid-friendly camp so far. With multiple pools, a waterslide, playgrounds adjacent to the picnic site, fishing onsite, wide open grass fields to kick balls around, etc. I think most kids would be happy here, however, parents may miss sessions to parent, so weigh that in mind against the gramma tax of dropping them off with relatives for the weekend. There is also a dog park adjacent to the site, however I do not know if the hotel is pet friendly. I would suggest dogs stay home. We are not bringing ours.
8. BEACH DAY!!! Overwhelmingly we saw support for a camp-ending beach day, so we are rolling with it. Pack a swimsuit - I'm bringing mine!

I’m going to attend, god willing and the hurricane don’t rise. The end of September is prime hurricane season. Also, I’m going to be teaching children, who apparently need structure and for their teacher to show up. Etc.

I'm thrilled about the new dates, I can definitely attend!!!

I am also excited over this point:

I will tell you that rooms are for 2-4 individuals, and priced per room rather than per person, and will be billed separately from your CMTO "pass".

As an introvert who snores and keeps odd sleeping hours I will salute all the frugal folks who are going to roommate up to quadruple occupancy... then get a room just for myself.

For any Mustachians who have been curious about these multi-day events but hesitant over having to find a roommate (or rooming with someone you just met), or for anyone who worries about being peopled out without a quiet space to retreat to, this is a huge new feature. If having your own space is really important, being able to have your own room makes CMTO 2022 - FIRE-scape a good opportunity to see how you like a multi-day gathering of Mustachians.

Looking forward to money nerding and introverting with you all in the fall. 😃

Thanks folks!

We had a minor heart attack with the new dates since this puts us back-to-back with Moab, but then after a few minutes of talking things through we realized that this is actually a really good chance to reboot after a couple years of slacking and that the wider community connections and extended FIRE focus might be just what is needed, so we're embracing it. And Moab has happened the weekend after CMTO before, so there is no need to panic.

Momma and I are still planning on going to both events. We see the FIRE-scape as our chance to give and lead and Moab as a chance to lay back and relax - unless @NinetyFour has us up every morning at the butt-crack of dawn bagging peaks or something. :)

I’m going to attend, god willing and the hurricane don’t rise. The end of September is prime hurricane season. Also, I’m going to be teaching children, who apparently need structure and for their teacher to show up. Etc.

So intimidating. I'll have to reach back to the venue to see if they can hold quarters that are equipped with crusty socks and mobile furniture, as per your usual arrangements.

Thanks for moving this! I'm glad I don't have to cancel my dad's birthday. Poor guy would have been so disappointed...

Bring him along!  Dad, you’ll never guess what I got you for your birthday!

G-Dog - I hope you make it! It'll be just like the good old days! I haven't basked in the glow of your majestic presence in too many years!

(That's a "They might be Giants" reference in case you didn't know)

Thanks for moving this! I'm glad I don't have to cancel my dad's birthday. Poor guy would have been so disappointed...

Is your Dad getting Jiffy for his birthday?

Sounds great, thanks for organizing! PTF.

Thanks for posting! Now I'm posting to follow your post to follow. Lets see where this vortex leads us to!

😞 I cannot make those dates.

This is a great loss. I'm sorry... but also, we'll see you in Moab, right? Save me a seat by the fire!

This is absolutely fantastic! I’ll be able to go (or at least enter the pool for tickets)! I know it means a lot more work for the organisers, but I’m thrilled!

Deb, your streak goes unbroken! Even if you hate Canadian beaches.

De-lurking to say that I'm in!

Awesome! Can't wait to catch up with you again!

Folks, things are jumbled mess and I'm not sure who I missed replying too. Let's make this thing awesome. All of us.

I'm PTF. This seems pretty far-fetched for me, but DH has been talking about coming to meet all my internet friends, and maybe he'll be interested in dragging the kiddos away for a Canadian weekend. Perhaps we'll give it a go depending on the details. I really miss you all.

I think this location will be more kid-friendly than our previous venue. I mean, there's a WATERSLIDE! and a park, and you can toss them in Lake Ontario if they get on your nerves. Plus the ability to book a room for your family, or to share with another family and swap off baby duty.

Or (oooh) one of those rooms with a door between them to make a double room!! Momma and I should do that and put the boys in their own room.

That would be a good idea. I wrote it on my to-do list.

This may even be driving distance from the east coast, depending on whether your name is @grantmeaname or not.  I get 7-1/2 hrs driving time from Boston via Watertown.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On a different note, is there anyone who would like to volunteer to watch for changes to travel rules for folks crossing the border?  It would be good if we had person who is in tune with current travel restrictions and rules who can update the thread if restrictions are added or lifted between now and the end of September.
We need a person who can watch for entry rules in Canada, and a person who can keep in touch with airline rules and re-entry rules for Americans returning home. Or we can just have an open competition to see who can post updates soonest after they happen.
I think we have a sock pipeline if @Road To Avonlea attends.  This could be the luxurious rack experience where they can each have their own pair.
We really take care of you at CMTO - FIRE-scape.
Would folks be interested in a Basic Belt making workshop? You'll have to pay for materials, but you'll come away with a belt you made yourself, and the knowledge to make more if you want to.
And before Lews says anything, no, this is not a "belt," it is just a belt.
I know it's still early days, but do you have an idea if a lottery will be required like for the last camp? I'm planning on some overseas travel in September and I have to decide way in advance to make arrangements for an early return.
Good Question. I don't think we'll have time for all that a lottery entails, so likely we will put them up for sale and once the tix are sold, that's it. It'll be like trying to get front row seats to see Van Halen or something. Might as well jump.
More, other news that even the organizing committee hasn't heard yet (sorry organizing committee).
I had a meeting on Friday with the local tourism board and they are super excited to see us. They suggested a bunch of local venues to replace the traditional Friday afternoon canoe trip and a handful of local partners that may work with us for different things. In light of that who would be interested in:
Workshops:
- visiting a local bike shop for a one-on-one with a small business owner to talk ethical business and how small biz can make big differences locally
- visiting a local bike shop for a one-on-one with a bike mechanic for tips on bike shopping, tweaks to improve your ride and "ten things your bike mechanic doesn't want you to know"
Group outing ideas for Friday afternoon:
- local brewery for "A pint and a paddle" - a beer tasting followed by a kayak outing
- Rum runners and secret spaces - a local history walking tour to explore prohibition era secret spaces and see how the underground liquor trade worked. Prince Edward County was on teh liquor pipeline to upstate New York, and locally the booze flowed south. The tour wraps up with a cocktail hour in a local speakeasy.
- Wine Tour and diner - by far the most expensive option, but also a lot of fun - tour a vineyard, see wine production first hand, have a tasting of local wines and then return to the main dining hall for dinner pairing with local wines.
- Beach day! - by far the cheapest option - pack a hamper of lunch and head to a local beach for fun in the sun.
Tell me your favourites, and we'll go from there.
Also, I have a line on local bike rentals, I'm working on what that would look like. I HIGHLY recommend bringing a bike if you have one, but also, security at the venue is iffy. One outdoor bike rack in an unlit, quiet corner.  J1 and I took a walk from teh venue to the lunch zone and it's about a ten minute walk. That would be 2 minutes on really nice trails on a bike. At dusk, it was still a very nice walk.
Yes - kingston-ish area-ish, sortof. Prince Edward County. (https://goo.gl/maps/6cdxaBx9c23RBdNE6)
Good news... we have now locked up three venues adjacent to each other for camp use. One is a pavillion overlooking Lake Ontario, another is a picnic field which we can convert into a volley-Hockey-ball venue on Saturday afternoon, and the third is the hotel property/room.
Folks, the Jello is slowly being nailed to the wall. I am hoping to have pricing early next week and a ticket window open in about a week and a half.
Some socials/email to follow to build community:
And the mailchimp list... which if we already have your email addy, you are on, and if you don't, well, we'll share more about it shortly.
OK Folks - I spent some time wrapping my head around speakers and agenda items. I have a few, which is good. As I see it, we currently have 2 "open time workshops" (gardening - @RetiredAt63, and Belt-making - myself). as well as 4 schedule-able sessions. I'd like to get about 4 more scheduled sessions put together - moderated conversations are always good, as are Q&A style events which take basically no planning.
Tentative Topics so far include... (I've totally made up these titles, and they are very much subject to change)
- "The marketing of an Anti-Marketing mindset."
- "Resiliency and the FIRE-Mindset."
I’d be happy to moderate a panel of post-FIRE folks  — an “Ask Me Anything” format with a set of prepared questions plus taking questions from the floor.  Panel attendees to be selected at the conference, aiming to bring forward some quieter voices.
Similar to the session I moderated at last CM*TO, also same at CM*MW.
When planned at the end of the schedule, the discussion tends to capture the spirit of the weekend.
A thousand apologies CW! You are TOTALLY on the list, and I am looking forward to your session!
Everyone else - I'm doing a bunch of work on this tonight. I promise. There will be updates coming soon, and hopefully pricing and ticketing by the weekend. But I am really slammed with stuff right now, so maybe not? But definitely maybe. Unless it doesn't happen.
FIREscape UPDATE
Last night there was a meeting. It was intense. Words like "collaboration" and "cross-functional" and "Ameliorate" were tossed around. Someone even wore a tie. We thought outside the box and flew ideas up the flag pole to see who saluted. Things are taking shape.
So here's all the stuff you've been waiting to find out.
1. Dates remain unchanged: September 30, Oct 1, 2.
2. Cost: We anticipate a per person cost of $175 plus your room and some meals.
3. Inclusions: Your ticket includes all the wonderfulness of CMTO-FIREscape plus meals on Friday. Your hotel room will have to be booked with the hotel itself at a cost of $95 per night. You can get a double bed (sleeps 2) or two double beds (sleeps 4). Some will opt for a room to themself.
4. Meals: we include lunch and a group dinner on Friday, and the hotel includes breakfast with your room however Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday lunch will be "Fend for yourself." We chose this arrangement because there is a large catering fee to eat at the site, and arranging catering for all meals with different vendors was going to be a logistical nightmare. Note: by not including all meals we cut the ticket price by about $100 per person. Catering is expensive, and you can do better than we could.
5. Speakers: we still need a few more presenters. Currently we are heavy on lifestyle stuff and need a few more technical presentations. If you want to share strategies or do a case study, let me know.
6. Post-FIRE panel: We would like as much diversity as possible on the panel this time. In the past we've done targeted panels, this go round we'd like to hear from more folks with more ideas. Please raise your hand.
7. Kids and pets: this will be the most kid-friendly camp so far. With multiple pools, a waterslide, playgrounds adjacent to the picnic site, fishing onsite, wide open grass fields to kick balls around, etc. I think most kids would be happy here, however, parents may miss sessions to parent, so weigh that in mind against the gramma tax of dropping them off with relatives for the weekend. There is also a dog park adjacent to the site, however I do not know if the hotel is pet friendly. I would suggest dogs stay home. We are not bringing ours.
8. BEACH DAY!!! Overwhelmingly we saw support for a camp-ending beach day, so we are rolling with it. Pack a swimsuit - I'm bringing mine!
(https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/60e266b4b2cb38e4df1407c9f591742da9c2fc50/106_246_1132_1463/master/1132.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=format&fit=max&s=9d13090208383abcb2f65c4255070c08)
I hope tickets will go on sale in the next week or so as we finalize costs on a few items. A mailchimp message similar to this one will go out shortly, followed by an announcement of the window to buy a ticket, and then the ticket sales will open. We are targeting for 75 attendees. I expect @grantmeaname to bring 15.
Any questions, fire away.
I’m sure there’ll be plenty to do. Last time we checked out the Mennonites. You could probably visit the nearest star fort, or whatever military fortification is in the neighbourhood.
An extra detail some folks may like to know: your room will have a small fridge, so if you take medication or have breast milk or baby formula that requires refrigeration you have facilities for that.  It also means:
4. Meals
If you have dietary needs or are badass frugal enough to want to brown bag the fend-for-yourself meals, you can bring your own food to CMTO - FIREscape.  Your room also has a microwave.
There will be some very-nearby places to buy food for meals as well as walking-distance options.
If Sam visited Fort Henry, I suspect she's spend the day clandestinely taking photos and notes and prodding at the site to find a weakness to exploit in her next invasion.
Sam will probably choose to avoid any of the armed forces facilities.  People would automatically sense her experience and authority and she would be inundated by foolish young people bemoaning the medical consequences of their poor choices and describing the resultant colour changes of their bodily fluids.
Probably not how she wants to spend her vacation.  Probably.
I'd see reports in advance indicating a fall, and thus avoiding it.
Sandwiches?! Are you crazy?! The mustard would imbibe into the bread, ruining its integrity if you made it in advance. There will only be salads, and sushi. None to be shared. I will however have some socks to bribe Grant's partner in case I need something gotten from the river.
POSITION AVAILABLE:
Wanted: Field Crew.
2 Positions. Maybe more.
Team of skilled individuals to lay out and mark a playing field to match the standards of the International VolleyHockeyBall Committee (The IVC). Individuals must understand what a rectangle is, what 3,4,5 triangle is, how to do layouts using a bit of rope and yelling, and how to measure using a surveyor's measuring tape. It is expected that you know what "alternating colours" means. Proficiency with a rattle can of field paint and one of those painty stick things that the guys who do locates use is expected.
Pay (in donuts) reflective of experience.
There is a test.
Apply at reception.
This is the current thrust of my panel for upcoming camp mustache Seattle:
TITLE: Why Your Early Retirement Isn't Early Enough: A Discussion About Semi-Early Retirement & the Time Value of Time.
DESCRIPTION: Most of us attending an event like this have rejected the traditional paradigm of "Work until you're 65+" in lieu of an early retirement. In this session, Joe is going to share why he thinks the conventional FIRE path of working for 10-20 years full bore and then quitting full stop is just as crazy, leading to burnout along the way and then years of "decompression."
So what's the solution? A hybrid-model of working and retiring early is an alternative to these two proposals. We often talk about the time value of money, but here we'll also talk about the time value of time and why you should be pulling the plug even earlier than you think via various methods of Semi-Early Retirement.
Happy to do a session on anything, if you need speakers. Happy to just attend, if you don't. :)
OK... we have enough sessions nailed down and enough interest from attendees that I've gone and done it... The deposit is paid, the expensive space is booked.
A few things you should know, many of which I have said before, but bear repeating...
1. Our event space is spread out with about 1km between our lunch shelter and our formal space, and an outdoor area in between. Bring walking shoes or a bike, or both. There is an outdoor bike rack you can lock to. Bike rentals are available locally, but they ain't cheap. I am working on a discount.
2. You will need to budget for 2 lunches and a dinner in addition to your camp fees. We will feed you on Day 1, but after that it's fend for yourself.
3. You will need to book your room separately from the camp ticket. We have arranged a group rate of $95 CAD per night. The property is strictly pet-free, as I was reminded this morning.
Camp Mustache Toronto (CMTO) “FIREscape”
Break out that calendar and put a big star on June 1, 2022 -- Registration for Camp Mustache Toronto FIREscape opens on June 1, 2022 at 0800 EST, Sharp! You likely need all the details… well, keep on reading, ‘cause we’ve got ‘em all!
What is Camp Mustache Toronto FIREscape?
The fourth annual (not counting “those years”) CMTO will have three days of fun, friends and finances -- Friday meals, all presentations and many activities are all included in the registration fee!
Why come to Camp?
Do your friends think you’re ‘weird about money’?  Come to camp and make new friends – people who ‘get’ your FIRE lifestyle.
Been on the FIRE path for a while?  Come to camp and learn from people who are farther along on this journey.  What’s life really like post FIRE?
When is it?
Camp Mustache Toronto FIREscape is September 30 – Oct 2, 2022.
Where is Camp Mustache Toronto held?
BIG NEWS! This year we have a new location about halfway between Kingston and Toronto. The resort (and we use that term VERY loosely) location is about a two and a half hour drive from Toronto airport, just under three hours from Syracuse airport, and about two and a half hours from the Ottawa Airport. It’s pretty dang fancy by CMTO standards overlooking Lake Ontario, and with two pools, a gym, tennis courts, and even microwaves and fridges right in your room!
For security reasons, the actual venue location will only be released to ticket holders.
How Much Will Camp Mustache Toronto cost?
Tickets for camp will be $175CAD - (Currently about $135 USD) Note that this event fee is non refundable, and non-transferable.
While we expect this event will run, and is in a safe, responsible venue, we cannot guarantee what the future holds. Unfortunately we cannot refund in the event of disaster, pandemic closures, or other situations beyond our control. In the event that the camp cannot run, we may attempt to distribute remaining funds equally among ticket holders  once disbursements and costs are accounted for, however participants should be aware that this event does not generate profit, and a refund of the camp fee of $175 is not to be expected.
Rooms are booked separately through the resort for $95CAD (plus taxes) per room, per night on our special CMTO FIREscape group rate. This rate includes a free continental breakfast and use of all amenities on site.
Our group rate allows you flexibility to book your own room or share with a friend and save costs. Rooms are either 1 king bed, or 2 queen beds - either choice is at the same price. We have held 50 rooms at this heavily discounted rate.
Room refunds are between the participant and the venue; however, our booking contract allows you to cancel your room for full refund up to Sept. 26th.
How do I get a ticket?
Unlike past years, CMTO FIREscape tickets will be first come, first served. Once they are gone, they are gone. Given our short timeline, and competing priorities, we simply do not have resources to manage a lottery or waitlist. Watch for the signup email on June 1st, and get your payment in as soon as your registration is confirmed to secure your spot.
What payment options exist?
Payment options will be detailed in the forthcoming registration email, however, the most likely will be via bank transfer (Canadians) or PayPal (all participants). Some payment methods may have fees.
How many people are coming?
We have about 60 available spots.  CMTO has always sold out quickly, generally right after registration opens.
Who Can come?
Whoever gets a ticket – All are welcome!  Registration opens on June 1, 2022 at 0800EDT and successful registrants will receive an email with registration/payment instructions.  Stay tuned to this thread for more info. Your space is only guaranteed once your ticket payment is received.
Can I bring my Spouse/Kids?
If you buy them a ticket, yes they can come. All adults pay the same rate. Children are free; however, we cannot provide food for children.
Can I bring my dog?
No. The venue strictly prohibits dogs on the property. Please leave them at home or at a local kennel.
What is included in the registration fee?
3 days and 2 nights at CMTO FIREscape including Friday meals and all presentations, participation in the world famous Volley-Hockey-Ball tournament, and a pile of great conversation and story sharing. A schwag bag is also being assembled.
What are the presentations?
The CMTO FIREscape Organising Committee members are currently planning the sessions and presentations –  please reach out if you have an idea for a topic or speaker.   There will be topics of general interest to Mustachians, as well as "Core subject matter" such as financials, careers, and post-RE lifestyle.  There will be sessions geared to those new to FIRE as well as those farther along in their FIRE journey.
Current proposals include “How to beat marketers at their own game”, “Building tribe” and “Strategic investing.” We welcome your suggestions for topics of interest.
OOooooOOooooooo!
You know if you were an Ontario resident, you could apply the hotel expenses against the Ontario Staycation tax credit for a 20% discount on lodging, bringing your room rate down to about $80 per night.
https://www.ontario.ca/page/ontario-staycation-tax-credit
Which would make this extra OOooooOOooooooo!
Once people have their tickets (June 1, just a few more days!) this, or the dedicated forum space created for CMTO - FIREscape attendees, is probably a good spot to look for roommates!
How Much Will Camp Mustache Toronto cost?
Tickets for camp will be $175CAD - (Currently about $135 USD) Note that this event fee is non refundable, and non-transferable.
This may be obvious to those who are not chronically sleep deprived due to newborn, but does non-transferable here mean "the fee can't be transferred to another camp" or "tickets can't be resold/transferred to someone else for this camp"? I recall resale being allowed in the past.
Good question Novik, and thanks for highlighting it.
With our compressed timeliness and all the hurdles we are jumping this year, we (I) just don't have the spoons to juggle ticket swaps etc.
Camp is in 3.5 months, so most folks should have a handle on what their life will look like in September and we feel like making this final sale is both fair, and simple.
As we work on details of camp, and try to finalize all the final things, I wonder, what is the worst swag you've received at an event you've been to? There must be some good stories out there.
I've been handed so many squishy traffic lights and hard hats that I just nope out now. But I've also gotten some surprisingly handy stuff and a few really nice pens. Anyone who hands me a pre-loaded USB drive with their product info should beware that thing will be wiped clean and repurposed without me ever seeing what was on it.
Koozies  / can insulators - what a waste!
Foam stress “balls” (or globe or other shape)
Cheap pens (good pens are a joy!)
Branded chip clips (usually so cheap that they don’t work)
Mardi Gras beads
If they actually worked I would love it, but so far the ones I have gotten don’t really work, and they are heavy and their own weight pulls them off the bag.  Working chip clips would be great.
2hr 50 minutes, no tolls via the ferries OR
2hrs 14 minutes,  bridge toll according to Google maps.
Toll is around US$5.
Tiny note pads.  I have so many of those from gardening conferences.
Cheap pens and pencils and mechanical pencils.
Fat pens, not all of us have big hands.
Cheap insulated car mugs, the ones with thin lips that don't feel nice when you drink from them.
Nice to have if you don't already have one -
good pen, mechanical pencil
Regular size pad of paper.
I was going to say Nice clipboard (ideally with a cover), but I just checked Staples and they are pricey.
What are chip clips? Never mind, I googled, they are bag clips.  Which are handy for closing bags of sugar etc.
If I manage to get a ticket I don't really need a swag bag at all.  No I am not minimalist, I am old and my apartment is full.   ;-)
I don’t like swag, because of the associated feeling of being suddenly responsible for the life cycle of some little plastic thingum I didn’t even want in the first place. I feel guilty throwing it away unused, but I also hate accumulating that kind of stuff.
Tomorrow folks... tomorrow is the day. At 8:00 AM we will be posting here and sending out an email with a link to a registration form, and the first 50 people to click "send" on that completed form will be going to camp. We have about 15 spots already taken with org committee (and their partners) and helpers (and their partners), and I think that we will sell out pretty quick.
Who will be up at 8, refreshing the thread?
Well folks, we have 71 tickets sold for camp, so it looks like this thing is for real now. A few stragglers came in yesterday, but most of the tickets sold in day one. Every time this happens, I am honoured that everyone loves camp so much. I hope we meet you expectations once again.
If a few more people sign in that will be OK, but also we are limited by the number of available rooms, so next it's a race to book rooms and find roomies. Being that there are only 50 rooms blocked off, and that you can cancel rooms if needed, I suggest at least getting a hold on one quickly. You can sort out room mates afterwards.
Watch for payment instructions from Momma. She'll steer your ship through that, and then, its on us to pull the magic together for September. Thanks for being awesome everyone!
The instructions for booking rooms haven't gone out yet, have they?
Nope - room bookings follow ticket payment.
Thanks to the prompt payment crowd! We are now 25% paid! Watch for an invitation to the private planning forum and private Facebook page later this weekend.  I'm away from home right now, but will make sure you are added when I get back. Likely late tomorrow or Monday.
Yup - if you've paid for them, then just PM me the names and once the sub is set up, I'll add them in. Right now I am having a moment where nothing is working and I'm not sure why... but we'll get through this. Somehow.
I was told it’s inappropriate to publicly allow my catholic guilt re:swag to impinge on other’s good time and bonhomie. Apologies. Apparently I’ll be experiencing a 10 minute ‘penalty’ due to my Eyore nature. Seems a bit harsh, but I guess this is what happens when you give a Fish some small power.
Damn! I was just about to agree with you, but wanted to get to the end of the thread first. Don't know whose toes were stepped on, but I take the same dim view of swag as you do/did. Ten minutes was far too harsh, IMO. Glad your bunk was secured after the too-long TO.
I'm sad I won't be able to make the pilgrimage to CM*TO 2022, but I have a big Thing that does good in my community, so I'm stuck stateside. DH and I plan to hop in the rig as soon as Thing is finished at approximately 1400 hours on 8 October, 2022. We will make the butt-numbingly long drive to Moab, hoping to arrive late on 9 October 2022. Therein we will be regaled with tales and yarns of what we missed (boo-hoo). I hope to live vicariously through Ninetyfour and the Emboks Oh, and I expect there will be some fishy tales, and a few upside-downers as well.
Hope everyone has a blast!
WOW! Thanks for all the quick payments campers! So far 85% of the camp passes are booked and paid for. I am blown away!
I've been speaking with MMM hisself today via email, and on Wednesday he will post about unpaid bunks to sell off the ones that go unpaid. Looks like we will be having another full slate of guests this year! If anyone following this thread is still sitting on the fence about grabbing a spot, you can let us know by filling in the form here: https://forms.gle/H2RPkWrTA5yH8poK7
We can't give you a chance at a spot until after the Wednesday payment deadline, but you can be first in line to snag an unpaid spot by filling in teh form today.
Hey Fishy, recently, someone made a snarky response to your perfectly legitimate question (elsewhere, not on this thread) and I struggled to respond civilly. What I wanted to say is "Do you know who the fuck you're talking to???
Thank you for all the work to make this amazing thing happen. You are changing lives, man Fish!
Awwwww - thanks!
Honestly, that person wasn't altogether off base. A big part of why I run this event each year is in the hopes that I figure out what the hell I'm doing. Someday it will all come together.
They may not have been altogether off base, but they were dick-ish not polite about it, which you absolutely did not deserve. Anyone should be able to ask a legitimate question without ridicule or derision. We have plenty of threads that could be answered with a few clicks, but that doesn't always get you the Mustachian take on things.
No matter how many posts one may have, that doesn’t make any of us an expert on everything mustachios or financial.  Not to mention the always present gap between theory and practice.  That comment was dickish, dickfully dickish.  And no answer, so no proof they knew the answer either.
Hahaha! Shield your eyes if you do not wish to be disillusioned: I have almost 19k posts. I don't buy individual stocks. I pay for the services of a CPA and a Financial Planner. I know enough to be helpful on some topics, but I sure as hell don't know everything about a *LOT* of things. There's no correlation between post count and depth (or breadth) of knowledge. I do admire people who are willing to help others and are in turn, not afraid to ask for help. And people who orchestrate big meetups get a special place in the MMM Pantheon of All-Stars, which I believe is our version of Heaven.
Oh, and I am FIRE'd as hell and have been for almost a decade, so I must be doing something right, lol.
Well everyone, camp is done and we (metaphorically) burned the town down.
There was volley-hockey-ball, and inspiration, there were tears and smiles, there was running and gaming and sleeping and shouting and dancing and by the end of the weekend there was a crowd of friends who only 3 days before were only acquaintances.
Thanks to everyone who came out, everyone who played hard and worked hard, and everyone who shared so much to make this event a success.
I'm sleepy now. I need to sleep. Someday there will be time for that...
